WASHINGTON, Dec 2 (Reuters) The United States has approved a potential $1.7 billion Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to India for upgrading and supporting the Indian Navy’s fleet of MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. This significant deal, cleared by the U.S. State Department, marks another milestone in the growing defense collaboration between the two nations.

The Indian government has requested advanced systems and equipment, including 30 MIDS JTRS communication systems, external fuel tanks, advanced data transfer systems, spare and repair parts, and ongoing software delivery and support. The primary contractor for this deal will be Lockheed Martin, a leading global aerospace and defense company.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) emphasized that the sale will strengthen the U.S.-India strategic relationship, enhance India’s ability to counter current and future threats, and bolster its anti-submarine warfare capabilities. This development comes as part of India’s broader strategy to counter China’s growing influence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and to address regional instability linked to Pakistan.

India first announced the procurement of 24 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters in February 2020 under a $2.2 billion deal to replace its aging Westland Sea King and Kamov Ka-28 fleets. The Indian Navy has since inducted nine Seahawks, with the remaining 15 helicopters delayed.

The MH-60R, a fourth-generation multi-mission helicopter, is globally regarded as the most advanced in its class. Armed with Mk 54 torpedoes and Hellfire missiles, the Seahawks are designed for anti-submarine warfare and air-to-surface combat missions. Advanced radar and sonar systems allow these helicopters to perform seamlessly in challenging maritime conditions.

The MH-60R upgrade is seen as part of India’s efforts to modernize its navy to ensure dominance in the IOR. The sale underscores the deepening defence partnership between India and the U.S., aligning with their shared commitment to a free and secure Indo-Pacific region.

As the Indian Navy continues to induct MH-60R helicopters into its fleet, this upgrade deal will serve as a force multiplier, enabling India to address emerging maritime security challenges with greater confidence and efficiency.
