The Hindu Students Council (HSC), a US-based organization, issued a statement extending its “heartfelt congratulations” to former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard on her historic appointment as Director of National Intelligence.

According to HSC, this makes Gabbard the first Hindu American to serve in a U.S. Cabinet position.

“As young Hindu Americans, we are incredibly proud to witness Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard’s appointment as Director of National Intelligence,” Sohini Sircar, chairperson of the Hindu Students Council is quoted saying in the Feb. 12, press release. “Her leadership and unwavering commitment to her faith serve as an inspiring example for Hindu youth and students across the United States.”

In 2020, Congresswoman Gabbard was the keynote speaker at HSC’s Virtual Commencement Ceremony and spoke directly to HSC’s network of Hindu students. “Her speech, which emphasized the importance of leadership, resilience, and staying true to one’s values, resonated deeply with the students who were in attendance and continues to motivate them today,” the organization said.

The HSC described Gabbard’s public service as nothing short of trailblazing. A US Army veteran, Gabbard became the first Hindu American elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012.

“We look forward to Ms. Gabbard’s continued leadership in her new role as Director of National Intelligence,” said Riddhi Patel, president of Hindu Students Council. “She serves the community while remaining grounded in faith and service, serving as an example for the next generation of leaders within the Hindu community and beyond.”

Founded in 1990, Hindu Students Council describes itself as  one of North America’s largest youth organizations, which provides a welcoming community for Hindus at schools and on campuses, provides a platform for young Hindu leaders “to learn, grow and engage in education, empowerment and seva.” It also carries out various initiatives, including community service projects, cultural events, educational programs, and interfaith dialogues.
