UP Association of North America celebrates Diwali

The Uttar Pradesh Association of North America held Diwali celebrations Oct. 30, 2021, at the E Hotel Banquet & Conference Center in Edison, New Jersey.

The community organization, UPANA, which is a non-profit, says its mission “is to preserve and promote the cultural and social heritage of the north Indian states” of India, and “to promote cultural, social, educational and charitable activities as well as foster friendship and understanding among the people of India from different geographical territories.”

Founder and Chairman Rakesh Agarwal, speaking at the event, wished all those present a Happy Diwali and called on all to enjoy the cultural program and partake of the great food being served.

Kamal Rastogi, trustee of UPANA said the organization is being rejuvenated and the Diwali festival is being revived to benefit the younger generation.

India’s Consul General in New York Randhir Jaiswal, also addressed the gathering, wishing all a Happy Diwali.

Padma Shri Dr. Sudhir Parikh, a special invitee at the event was presented a bouquet. “This year’s Diwali is truly the ‘Festival of Lights’ because we won (over) the pandemic.”

Former New Jersey State Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula, speaking to ITV Gold, wished everyone Happy Diwali and introduced State Assemblyman Sterley Stanley and candidate for the Edison Board of Education Padaraja Chinta.

Assemblyman Stanley wished UPANA all the best for the future and many more Diwalis.

“Diwali is celebrated all over the world. All Indians celebrate Diwali. And it is great to see how it is being integrated into American culture as well,” Stanley said.

Several youth performed dances and songs were sung during the evening.
