Two alumni of Indian origin among Stony Brook University ‘Top 40 Graduates Under 40’ list

Stony Brook University, NY, recently announced its 2024 class of 40 Under Forty alumni honorees, who are being recognized during Homecoming week at a ceremony October 24, at the Charles B. Wang Center.

At least two of the honorees are of Indian origin, Dr. Amruta G. Desai in Healthcare, and Marvin Parasram in the field of Science and Engineering.

The 40 Under Forty awards recognize exceptional young alumni who have distinguished themselves as leaders in their communities.

“From providing strategic counsel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration during the COVID-19 public health crisis and helping to ensure veterans get the resources they need to working in the New York State Assembly and competing in the Olympics, this year’s class of honorees joins the ranks of exceptional alumni dedicated to helping their communities and addressing global issues,” the University said in a news release.

Dr. Desai, a Clinical Assistant Professor in Anesthesiology at Stony Brook, is a specialist in pain management. She graduated from the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, did her internship in Internal Medicine from NYMC-Westchester Medical Center. Dr. Desai did her Residency in Anesthesiology from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, and was awarded a Fellowship in Pain Management at the Baystate Medical Center.  Dr. Desai earned a Masters in Public Health and an MBA from Stony Brook University. On her profile published on the University website, Dr. Desai says, “I enjoy not only the procedural aspect of anesthesiology and interventional pain medicine but love being the person who is able to bring comfort and pain relief in both the hospital and outpatient settings.”

Published in several journals, and author of chapters in books, Dr. Desai notes she was raised in the town of Stony Brook where her parents taught for more than 30 years at the University that she also attended. “I returned to the area after training to care for my community,” she says.

Dr. Parasram, an Assistant Professor Chemistry at New York University, is a graduate of Stony Brook U, with a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

In 2024, Dr. Parasram was awarded the NYU Golden Dozen Teaching Award. His Parasram Lab at NYU outlines its goals as the following: “Our research focuses on the development of novel synthetic methodologies that will have a broad impact on society. Research members of the Parasram Lab are exposed to state-of-the-art instruments, encouraged to think creatively, and trained to become effective leaders in both the synthetic and local communities.”

He is the recipient of a number of other honors and awards such as the 2023 Thieme Journal Award; 2022 – 2024 ACS PRF Doctoral New Investigator Award; 2019-2020 National Institutes of Health Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Postdoctoral Fellowship Award; 2018 University of Illinois at Chicago Graduate College Outstanding Dissertation Award; 2015 University of Illinois at Chicago Graduate Student Council Award; 2017 University of Illinois at Chicago Graduate College Student Presenter Award; and the 2015 Gordon Research Conference Carl Storm Underrepresented Minority Fellowship.
