Govinda Naam Mera is a black comedy, a first from Dharma Productions, and this time their partners are, again, Viacom 18 Studios in production, and Disney+Hotstar, which will stream the film from December 16. The trailer launch of the film was held at the J.W. Marriott, November 20.

It was a grand event with the trailer welcomed with cheers by fans, who were also invited along with the media and given gift hampers. These hampers were also presented to four journalists who took part in a competition at the end of the formal function.

With a twisted love story, dramatic life and ultimate chaos, the film presents Vicky Kaushal in an all-new avatar. The complete family entertainer has been written and directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Shashank Khaitan and also stars Bhumi Pednekar and Kiara Advani.

Exploring the happy-go-lucky life of Govind A. Waghmare (Vicky Kaushal), a struggling choreographer, the comedy thriller takes viewers on a rollercoaster ride of laughter, romance, and thrill. Wedged between his marriage with Gauri (Bhumi Pednekar) and love for his girlfriend, Suku (Kiara Advani), the three actors come together for an unconventional love triangle with dramatic turns and twists.

Govinda finds himself caught between his bullying wife, an unhappy mother and a girlfriend who wants to marry him. It’s all fun and games until he discovers that he may end up losing his inheritance—the ancestral bungalow in which he lives. Each character in the movie has a dark side, and nothing is as it seems.

Vicky said, “I am very excited to collaborate with Shashank for a fun story. We’ve made this film with all our hearts and it makes me happy to finally bring it to my audiences. My association with Karan and Dharma has always been special and with Disney+ Hotstar on board, it only gets better!”

Shashank Khaitan said, “I like creating films that cater to family audiences. Govinda Naam Mera is rooted in comedy, romance and dance, making it a family watch. With the holiday season kick-starting where families often watch movies together, the idea was to bring a movie close to the audience through Disney+ Hotstar that will implore a whirlwind of emotions as you hold your bellies!”

Bhumi Pednekar added, “The journey of Govinda Naam Mera has been super fun so far. I am nervous and excited at the same time as it’s a different genre for me and I can’t wait to see what the viewers think of it.”

Kiara Advani, recalling the fun vibe from the set, said, “Govinda Naam Mera is our labor of love. Dharma is home and this film further strengthens my association with them. Suku was an exciting character to take on. I hope the audiences enjoy the film as much as we did making it.”

The outlandish apparel worn by the three lead players as well as the writer-director proved quirky add-ons to Dharma Productions’ first tryst with black comedy in 44 years. Asked by newsindiatimes.com how Karan felt when Shashank, known for the …Dulhania franchise and Dhadak, offered him the script and how he feels every time Dharma gets a non-typical idea for a film or a web series from anyone, the filmmaker said, “The sad part is that we find it difficult to break our image. If we have made a Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, we have also made a Kapoor & Sons. We always want to make a variety of subjects. But everyone associates us only with a certain kind of subject.”

Vicky added that when Shashank offered him the role, it was with the words that he wanted the actor to look at something “pagal” (mad) that he had written. He revealed that Shashank was a great actor and dancer himself and that their first acquaintance was in their theater days when Shashank would play the lead and Vicky had a small role. He shot for this film immediately after Sardar Udham and his relatives back home in Punjab were thrilled that he was finally doing a film “in which I did not have to cry”.

Shashank, speaking of his approach, stated that he wrote every single day and would follow any good idea he had. He had to inform people that he had grown up watching Akshay Kumar, Govinda and Shah Rukh Khan and had no acquaintance with “Corleone, whose work I lied to them I was familiar with!”

Kiara quipped that after multiple projects with Dharma, she would soon want to sign their next, and Karan agreed. Bhumi Pednekar said that making the film was a fun ride and it was for the first time that she was playing such a bold character.

Among several dark comedies that have been made in Hindi cinema (possibly beginning with the cult but initially flop film, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, in the 1980s), mention was made of AndhaDhun and the OTT release, Lootcase.

Present on the occasion also were Gaurav Banerjee of Disney+Hotstar and Ajit Andhare of Viacom 18, both of whom heaped praises on Karan Johar, and Dharma CEO Apoorva Mehta, who stated that he was always treated with love and like family by Karan, who in turn called him his partner-in- crime.
