The web series Pop Kaun? is plain intolerable

When you eat an egg, you don’t have to eat the whole thing to know it’s bad.  So when I “consumed” this show, from the writer of some genuinely rib-tickling lines in films like Golmaal Returns, All The Best, Bol Bachchan, Golmaal Again and Housefull 4, I was convinced, within one episode, that a possibly fatigued writer and an over-confident director had laid an egg. An inedible one!

If what I watched in the excruciatingly unfunny first episode is comedy, then I am an alien from the farthest planet from Earth. I also fail to comprehend why actors of the stature and caliber of Saurabh Shukla, Ashwini Kalsekar (not seen in episode 1), Johny Lever, Zakir Hussain and the late Satish Kaushik accepted such roles and encouraged all the baloney.

Poor Nupur Sanon gets to make her acting debut here after being on a high with a music video with Akshay Kumar. She looks fetching, acts like a better-than-average newcomer but is handicapped by the standard of the show. When seasoned actors cannot salvage it, what can the poor girl do? As for Tusshar, he has not even entered the first episode, among some other actors here.

The film starts with Kunal Khemu being stopped by the cops and a boring confrontation sequence as I fiddled my fingers hoping that there were better things to come. I was woefully wrong. We had a Johny Lever registering what was said to him 10 seconds late, and thus giving the wrong reactions to people, and a contract killer of sorts changing his decision when he finds he is being assigned to kill someone who is set to be his progeny’s in-law.

Basically, as the corny title suggests, the series is about a young man trying to find his real father. Some extremely unfunny sequences of young boys in school set the tone for it. The dialogues have the rudiments of the Farhad Samji touch where puns, English and Hindi are combined, but since the base is shaky, they are not funny enough to make a mark.

The less said about everything else the better. This one will easily rank among the worst shows ever seen on the Indian web. What a kaun…Oops, I mean…con!
