“We won the whole ball of wax,” President Donald Trump said at a rally after his inauguration Monday. After a weekend full of balls, Trump and his supporters concluded the inauguration festivities with three more Monday night: the Commander in Chief Ball (for members of the military), the Liberty Ball (for supporters) and the Starlight Ball (for donors).

It may have been too cold for Trump to give his inaugural address outside, but the crowds gathered early to celebrate. They had to wait awhile for the president.

Presidents have appeared at some version of an inaugural dance since James Madison’s celebration in 1809. What started as a gathering for small group of friends has ballooned into a marathon of huge parties at hotel ballrooms, convention centers and other cavernous spaces in Washington.
