St. Joseph’s School for the Blind to honor Dr. Hemant Shah

On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, St. Joseph’s School for the Blind in Jersey City, NJ, will recognize local Family Practice Physician and philanthropist Dr. Hemant Shah for his generous contributions to the school.

In a press release, the School said that in recognition for his generosity, the school’s unique sensory room has been named in his honor as the “Dr. Hemant Shah Sensory Theater”.

Dr. Shah immigrated to the United States from India to pursue his medical career.  Settling in Jersey City, he began his Family Practice at 297 Central Avenue in 1983 where he continues to practice today.

He currently serves as an Attending Physician at CarePoint Health System’s two hospitals, Hoboken University Medical Center and Christ Hospital.

Throughout the years, Dr. Shah immersed himself in the community serving as Health Commissioner of the City of Jersey City and several leadership and board positions in various hospitals in Hudson County, the press release noted.

“Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Shah’s philanthropic endeavors have had a far reaching impact on both the New Jersey and global stage,” St. Joseph’s said.

He has provided major contributions to Temple restorations in both India and New Jersey and other global non-profit charitable organizations.  He has also established a lifetime sponsorship to a non-profit school in India and has provided major contributions to CarePoint Health Hospitals to build and develop research and conference centers.

His generosity, and his dedication to the pursuit of education led him to team with St. Joseph’s School for the Blind to help ensure the continuation of specialized services for children with disabilities, the press release said.

St. Joseph’s School for the Blind was founded in Jersey City more than a century ago.  The organization has expanded over the years and today serves individuals from birth through adulthood with special needs.  Programs include St. Joseph’s School for the Blind’s full-time education program, Early Intervention Program, In-District Support Services, and Adult Services.
