The Chicago-based South Asia Institute, which was established in 2015, announced it will hold the Satrangi Naach Night: Queer & Trans Family Affirming Evening of Community Circle Dances, on September 29, 2024 (4-8pm). Tickets are available at saichicago.org.

Organized in partnership with Desi Rainbow and Trikone-Chicago, this community event will feature traditional and contemporary music and provide a fun experience for people to learn and dance South Asian community circle dances such as Garba and Dandiya Raas.

“With the intention to create safer cultural spaces, this queer and trans affirming program aims to bring together queer people, their family and allies in a common space,” the press release from South Asia Institute said. Beginners will also be offered garba lessons by friendly instructors from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.

“The South Asia Institute has always tried to be inclusive. We hope that with this event we can create more spaces for queer folks and allies to come together and celebrate South Asian art and culture,” Brian Keigher, executive director of South Asia Institute is quoted saying in the press release. Other highlights of the event include intergenerational networking for the LGBTQIA2S+community, DJ music and cultural dances.
