On January 6, 2025, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Illinois, addressed the National Prayer Breakfast at the US  Capitol.

He was representing the Hindu community and during the service, the Indian American lawmaker recited the Gayatri Mantra to an audience that included congressional leaders from both parties and President Trump, who also spoke.

Since 1953, the National Prayer Breakfast has been an opportunity for Members of Congress to pray collectively for our nation, our leaders, and our friends abroad in a spirit of love, reconciliation, and unity, a press release from his office said. He described the Mantra as one of “the most sacred and auspicious” prayer in the Hindu faith. Krishnamoorthi began his address saying, “This is my prayer for the Congress, and the nation, and all of us.”

He first recited the Mantra in Sanskrit. He went on to provide a translation of the Mantra as follows: “We meditate on the divine radiance of the Supreme Being, the source of life, who is worthy of worship. May that divine light enlighten and guide us and our intellect toward righteousness and truth.”

“It was an honor to address the National Prayer Breakfast this morning with my colleagues and represent the Hindu community at an event focused on uniting American communities,” Krishnamoorthi said in the press release. “While we are a nation of countless faiths, we are united by our shared values and humanity. I was grateful for the opportunity to share the Gayatri Mantra with my colleagues as we work to expand the circle of inclusion to Americans of all faiths.”
