On December 4, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-IL, was presented with an award from the Uyghur Academy, honoring his dedication to the Uyghur cause.

Rep. Krishnamoorthi is the Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party.

The award is presented to individuals for their unwavering support for Uyghurs, human rights, justice, and freedom and their steadfast opposition to the CCP’s oppression, a press release from Krishnamoorthi’s office said.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Rishat Abbas, President of the Uyghur Academy, as well as to the World Uyghur Congress, Campaign for Uyghurs, Center for Uyghur Studies, and Uyghur American Association, for this incredible honor,” Krishnamoorthi is quoted saying in the press release. “In the face of immeasurable repression and cultural erasure, the Uyghur people continue to stand up to the CCP. I am proud to stand by the Uyghur people, including the vibrant Uyghur-American community, in protecting their beautiful culture and freedoms.”

The Congressman went on to say he looked forward to “continuing to be a fierce advocate for human rights and fighting for the release of those wrongfully detained or forced into labor in the People’s Republic of China.”
