In a two-minute 38 second video about making Ohio a “State of Excellence”, Indian American entrepreneur and politician, Vivek Ramaswamy, 39, made clear his intention to run for Governor of the Midwestern state. According to an Associated Press report, Ramaswamy will formally announce his run on Feb. 24, in Cincinnati, which ironically, has an Indian American Mayor Aftab Pureval, a Democrat.

“I would love to lead Ohio as a state of excellence,” Ramaswamy says, “Economic excellence and educational excellence.”

The Ohio Governor’s post is term limited, and became open as current occupant Mike DeWine has served the maximum tenure. The date for the party primaries are yet to be announced, but the election for this post will be on November 3,  2026, and is a ways off.

However, the Republican primaries may end up having many contenders against Ramaswamy. Currently, the Columbus Dispatch reports those who have declared their run include Ohio Attorney General David Yost, a Republican; Former President of Morgan County School Board Heather Hill, also a Republican; and on the Democratic side, Former director of the Ohio Department of Health Dr. Amy Acton.

Attacking the current education system and calling for leaving education to the states, Ramaswamy said in the video posted on X, that its, “Time to light a fire under the feet of our education system. Merit-based pay for teachers. Pass a basic civics exam to graduate. Get the cell phones out of the classroom. Bring back the presidential fitness test. Prioritize math, reading, & writing proficiency. Celebrate excellence over victimhood.” On his X site, Ramaswamy describes himself as a “Small-government crusader.”

In the video, he also laid out the outlines of his agenda as Governor.

“I want Ohio to be the best version of itself, actually,” adding, that he saw Ohio as a center of manufacturing for the aerospace and defense industries for the next twenty years, just as Silicon Valley was for the US economy in the last 20 years. He wanted Ohio to be the state that people were flocking into.

Most recently, Ramaswamy was working with SpaceX, Twitter and Tesla head Elon Musk for Trump’s newly created Department of Government Efficiency. However, he indicated he was leaving a little after Trump was inaugurated Jan. 20.

In a Feb. 15 post, US Senator Rick Scott, R-Florida, said, “Great news tonight that @VivekGRamaswamy is getting in the race: He is going to make a GREAT Governor!” to which Ramaswamy responded with “Time to make federalism great again,” and thanking Scott for his support.

“It was my honor to help support the creation of DOGE. I’m confident that Elon & team will succeed in streamlining government,” he tweeted, and talking heads concluded he was intending to run for Ohio Governor and would not be able to campaign for that post while working at DOGE, Newsweek reported.

Ramaswamy studied at Harvard University and earned his law degree from Yale University Law School. He is the founder of Roivant Sciences and Sio Gene Therapies.
