It was both Mahavir Jayanti & Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti. But henceforth, April 14 will also be remembered by the multitude of their fans as the wedding date for Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.

Ranbir and Alia tied the knot at the actor’s Bandra residence, Vastu, in the afternoon. The intimate wedding ceremony was attended only by about 35 family and close friends. The Kapoor family had kept the date of the wedding a secret until a day before, leading to endless speculation.

Alia took to Instagram the same evening, sharing a picture of the couple kissing. Other pictures were shared by the agency that handles her PR and others. The pictures included candid camera moments as well as special pictures after the actual rituals that pronounced them as man and wife.

Said the actress on Instagram, “Today, surrounded by our family and friends, at home … in our favorite spot – the balcony we’ve spent the last 5 years of our relationship – we got married. With so much already behind us, we can’t wait to build more memories together … memories that are full of love, laughter, comfortable silences, movie nights, silly fights, wine delights and Chinese bites. Thank you for all the love and light during this very momentous time in our lives. It has made this moment all the more special.” Alia signed off as “Love, Ranbir and Alia.”

The wedding festivities had begun on April 13 with a pooja followed by a mehendi function. Mom Neetu Kapoor, Karisma, and Kareena had also given a surprise choreographed dance performance at the sangeet.

Those present from Ranbir’s side, besides mom Neetu Kapoor and sister Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, were grand-uncle Shammi Kapoor’s wife Neila Devi Kapoor, uncle Randhir Kapoor and Babita, cosuins Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan (with hubby Saif Ali Khan), Reema Jain, Armaan Jain, Aadar Jain, Shweta Bachchan Nanda and Navya Naveli Nanda.

Alia’s family members included parents Mahesh Bhatt and Soni Razdan, Mukesh Bhatt, Pooja Bhatt, Shaheen Bhatt, Rahul Bhatt, Smilie and others. Three close friends from the industry— Karan Johar, Ayan Mukerji and Akansha Ranjan—also were present. Karan got emotional and could not hold back his tears and later, in a tweet, pronounced Ranbir as his “son-in-law.”

While immediate family members and even Karan Johar were dressed in shades of pink, other friends stuck to the white and gold theme of the wedding. Akansha Ranjan, however, wore a green saree. The couple wore Sabyasachi creations, though Alia’s dupatta was made by Manish Malhotra.

The wedding festivities included a performance by Prateek Kuhad. As the ceremony commenced indoors, sweet boxes were gifted to members of the media outside the residential complex.

“Congratulations to both of u. All the love and happiness,” wrote Katrina Kaif, who has been good friends with Alia and was also in a relationship with Ranbir Kapoor: she is expected to attend their reception.
