Queens Borough President Donovan Richards hosted a Diwali celebration on Oct. 19 at the Maha Lakshmi Mandir in Richmond Hill, NYC, to mark the Festival of Lights with the Caribbean Indian residents.

The Borough President has been a supporter of making Diwali a school holiday. Speaking at the event, he said Diwali is about validating communities who have fought for equal recognition more than just religious commemoration.

Writing on Instagram later, Richards said, “What a powerful and moving evening in #RichmondHill yesterday, as #Queens came out in force to celebrate #Diwali….To all our Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and Jain families, may the upcoming Festival of Lights bring you peace, knowledge and community.”
