National Council of Asian Indian Associations celebrates India’s 78th Independence Day in Northern Virginia

The National Council of Asian Indian Associations (NCAIA) celebrated India’s 78th Independence Day on August 17, 2024, at the Broad Run High School, in Ashburn, Virginia.

Chief Guest, Chancellor of the Rani Laxmi Bai Central Agricultural University, Panjab Singh, expressed his delight at participating in the Independence Day celebrations, and his pride in India’s achievements over the years.

“I have been visiting this country since 1967, and each time I interact with people here, I feel a deep sense of pride. I am especially proud of the Indians who excel in fields such as IT, healthcare, science, and industry. Their contributions are truly invaluable,” he remarked at the event which began with a devotional kirtan by members of ISKCON Potomac.

Virginia State Senator, Suhas Subramanyam, who won the crowded Democratic primary for US House in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District on June 18th, expressed, “Independence Day is very special to me,” noting that he learned much about India’s independence and its non-violent and peaceful struggle from his grandfather, who served in the Indian Army.

Senator Subramanyam, highlighted the ongoing relationship between India and the United States, emphasizing the mutual benefits of their continued cooperation.

Virginia State Delegate, Kannan Srinivasan, shared, “I have lived in Virginia since 1999 and have witnessed our community’s growth. There is no limit to our potential as we continue to grow and achieve together.”

Chairman Trustee of NCAIA, Sunil Singh, highlighted the remarkable progress India has made since gaining independence. He also emphasized the significant role of Indian Americans in the United States, noting that India’s development is greatly supported by their contributions.

NCAIA Chairman, Kripa Singh said, “The day reminds us of the bravery of those who fought for India’s freedom and the deep ties Indian Americans maintain with India and the United States.”

Several congressional leaders and Virginia state officials sent their greetings and messages. Senator Tim Kaine’s message was delivered by former Advisory Board Member of Virginia, G.D. Madhusudan, while Senator Mark Warner’s message was read by his Northern Virginia Regional Director, Tannia Talento. A message from the Virginia Attorney General, Jason Miyares was presented by his representative Harold Pyon.

VA State Senator, Saddam Salim, former DGP of Bihar, Gupteshwar Pandey, were among those who spoke at the event, which also featured a variety of cultural performances. NCAIA’s Cultural Chair, Meenal Singh, served as the emcee.

On the occasion, NCAIA’s Distinguished Service Awards were presented by NCAIA Board Members to Sirmukh Manku, Atul Kumar, Sant Gupta, Krishna Gudupati, Mere Apne Seniors program of Durga Temple, and Sada Bahaar Seniors program of Rajdhani Mandir.

Prior to the event, Marathi Kala Mandal of Greater Washington led a colorful parade followed by organizations including NCAIA, ISKCON Potomac, Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America, Sewa International, and JKYog.
