Modi to meet Indian Americans during US State visit: news report

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is visiting the United States June 21 to 24, 2023, is scheduled to meet Indian Americans on June 23, according to a Press Trust of India report quoting a leading member of the community.

Community leader Dr. Bharat Barai, a physician from Indiana, is quoted saying that a select group of Indian Americans from around the country will meet Modi in Washington, D.C. Barai told PTI that the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, which can seat some 900 people, has been reserved for the meeting scheduled for June 23 evening.

This meeting with Indian Americans is separate from the one at the White House for which thousands have already registered to see the PM in the South Lawn on June 22.

Apart from meetings with other groups interested in India, including business representatives, Modi is scheduled to have community events, among them with Indian Americans in Washington, D.C., following his June 22 meeting with President Biden and his address to the Joint Session of US Congress.

“Many business groups, investment groups, are looking at India as part of a strategy to diversify globally new supply chains, new investment opportunities… I think the hope will be to open up venues and activities for more investment,” Kurt Campbell, Biden’s pointman for the Indo-Pacific is quoted saying in a Reuters June 6 report on Campbell’s address to the Hudson Institute June 6.

Campbell is also quoted saying in the Reuters report, “My hope is that this visit basically consecrates the U.S.- India relationship as the most important bilateral relationship with the United States on the global stage, and that we effectively make it into sort of escape velocity.”
