Mayor avails of ‘lifetime opportunity’ to meet The Dalai Lama

The Indian-American and Tibetan-American Mayor of Cincinnati Aftab Pureval has been invited by The Dalai Lama for a visit to India.

A November 30, 2022 announcement from Mayor Pureval’s office says he was personally invited to India with a cohort of mayors for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.”

During his visit, the mayor plans on inviting His Holiness to Cincinnati “as part of ongoing efforts to put our City on the map as a flourishing, global destination,” Pureval’s office said.

The mayors and public figures joining Mayor Aftab on this trip include:

  • Pauline Cutter, Mayor of San Leandro
  • Greg Fischer, Mayor of Louisville
  • Bill Peduto, former Mayor of Pittsburgh
  • Libby Schaaf, Mayor of Oakland
  • Lonnie Ali, Philanthropist, widow of Muhammad Ali

“I am honored to take part in this incredible opportunity to meet His Holiness and invite him to our bold, dynamic City,” Pureval is quoted saying in the press release. “Having a global leader visit Cincinnati would be huge, and as the highest-ranking elected Tibetan American in the country, my meeting with him showcases our City’s commitment to diversity and growing the City equitably.”

Mayor Pureval will be returning to the U.S. Dec. 7.
