“Our depiction of Karsandas Mulji in Maharaj is just a drop in the ocean compared to the work of this great man!” said Siddharth P. Malhotra, who is celebrating the success and the acclaim the film has garnered on Netflix. The film, based on the 1862 court case known as The Maharaj Libel Case in Bombay (as Mumbai was then called), featured Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan as Karsandas Mulji.

On the social reformer’s birth anniversary, Malhotra took to his social media and expressed how what they have shown in the film is nothing compared to Mulji’s stature or work.

He added, “However, I am grateful that, through Maharaj, people are becoming aware of such an unsung hero who has shaped our society. Happy birthday, sir, and bless us from above,” he wrote in a note on Mulji’s birth anniversary. Previously, in an exclusive behind-the-scenes video, the director had also thanked Aditya Chopra for supporting his vision and bringing Maharaj to life.

Maharaj topped the streaming platform’s top 10 charts in India and 22 more countries. Five weeks later, the film is still trending in the top ten list globally. Siddharth P. Malhotra had last directed Hichki for Yash Raj Films and producer Aditya Chopra, a biopic that was dramatized and changed to a female protagonist of a physically-challenged teacher.
