Do Patti, which will stream on Netflix from October 25, stars Kajol and Kriti Sanon, who last came together in Dilwale (2015) again, with Shaheer Shaikh, Tanvi Azmi, Prachee Shah Pandya, Vivek Mushran, Brijendra Kala and others. The film also marks the debut of Kriti as a producer and is written and co-produced by Kanika Dhillon and directed by Shashank ‘Bob’ Chaturvedi, a big name in the ad world. Sachet-Parampara score music. Kriti also plays a dual role in this whodunit.

The trailer launch of this Kathha Pictures (Kanika) and Blue Butterfly Films (Kriti) was graced by the three ladies and Shaheer, and also by Monika Shergill, Vice-President, Content, Netflix India. Though it was the usual rave about each other and the film, there were some interesting moments and quotes, especially from the two superstars on stage.

Kriti Sanon on the film and on turning producer

“I have to say that it’s been a beautiful journey. I have always felt the need to be creatively involved other than merely acting, especially with those stories that touch you rather more than normal. As an actor, I always wanted to make that shift, and I am glad that it happened with Do Patti. It has not only my most challenging role, or roles, I should say, and I was craving for that as well, but the film also says something. There is lots of drama and layers and all the characters are mostly gray. So there is a lot to do and understand, and what the film says is beyond what it shows and is something I feel very strongly for.

It was a great journey to be creatively involved and see a film grow from a germ to a 16-pager to a draft to the final draft, and then see everyone join in and it becoming a beautiful team, and to look into the music and into everything else, I really, really enjoyed this journey. I also now know that produce karna aasaan nahin hai (It’s not easy to be a producer)! It’s a tough job, and there are a lot of things involved, and my co-producer Kanika put the film above anything else. That  passion is what I love Kanika Dhillon for, and that is why we were mostly on the same page. So get set for Butterfly’s first katha (story)!”

Kajol on Kriti Sanon

“In Dilwale we did not share that much space. In this film, we have lot of scenes together, and I got two Kriti Sanons! I see an amazing transformation in these eight years and I have already told her that actually. I have watched her grow, grow, grow, grow and grow and come to this point, taking in a National award along the way. So it’s huge and kudos to that!”

Kriti Sanon on Kajol

“When Kanika told me that Kajol was on board, I was so excited! I was like, ‘Are you serious?’ Because I have been her huge fan, we all have! During Dilwale, when I was watching Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan-sir, I had just come into films. I was really new, it was just my second film, and so I was learning on the set, but watching her, I was in awe. I was awestruck by how she switches on and off, and simply lights up the screen. Since then, she is getting better and better in the way she looks, and I can say that she looks far better in my film than she did then! I was more excited that I finally getting to do really meaty scenes with the performer that Kajol ma’am is. And what I especially love about her, simply because I saw more of it as I spent more time with her on this film, is that she is all for the scene. Like for a scene she would remark that if I said a certain line in a particular way, maybe it would help me feel in the way required, and that helped so much. Then if, according to her, I did well, she would also say, ‘Nicely done!’ and that meant so much. So she is a senior—yes, a great performer—yes, but I can talk to her as a co-actor too.  And her eyes are simply magical and she is really amazing on screen. So Kajol ma’am, thanks so much!”

Tailpiece

Kajol plays a cop for the first time in her 33-year career in Do Patti. She remarked that wearing a uniform was different from whatever else she wore in any film, as it automatically gave her a sense of authority and brought in respect. She insisted that she never asked Ajay Devgn for help or tips (as a veteran who has played several cops) and wickedly declared that she was the real Singham in their home!
