Ajay Devgn’s character, Captain Vikrant Khanna’s morals are as gray as the skies he flies through in Runway 34. The film is an aviation thriller and also marks Ajay’s return to the director’s chair six years after Shivaay. It is set to release on April 29. Ajay had first directed U Me Aur Hum in 2008.

Runway 34 is a story of a night of debauchery prior to taking charge of Flight Skyline 555 from Doha to Cochin, leaving the captain with a hangover, exhausted and unable to focus on his work. Yet when climatic conditions start replicating the turmoil within him, he has no option but to sober up. A howling cyclone rages on, while on ground, a distracted Air Traffic Control officer forgets to relay important information to the captain, which has the potential to threaten the lives of the 150 passengers and crew on board.

Captain Vikrant Khanna is put on trial for grave misconduct by a law-enforcement officer, who leaves no stone unturned to uphold justice. And then begins a cat and mouse game.

Runway 34 is produced by Ajay Devgn Ffilms and is co-produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak, Vikrant Sharma, Sandeep Harish Kewlani, Tarlok Singh Jethi, Hasnain Husaini and Jay Kanujia. The film also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Rakul Preet Singh, Boman Irani, Aakanksha Singh and Angira Dhar.

The film was earlier titled Mayday, but Ajay explained the title-change by saying, “When there is an emergency, you give the call of ‘Mayday’. But not many were able to understand this. The story of the film revolves around a runway called Runway 34. Why the pilot landed the plane on that runway forms the story.” The film, said the superstar, was thus as much about turbulence in the air where planes fly as well as that within a person’s mind.
