Indo-American Democratic Organization highlights community progress, political engagement, at annual banquet

Skokie, IL – The Indo-American Democratic Organization (IADO) celebrated its annual banquet on Sunday,October,6, 2024, bringing together nearly 200 elected officials, candidates, and community leaders for what has become the largest South Asian American political event of the year. The event was a powerful testament to the remarkable gains achieved by the South Asian American community, not just in Illinois, but nationwide.

Founded in 1980, IADO is the oldest South Asian American political advocacy organization in the United States. As one of the fastest-growing racial communities in the country, South Asian Americans are becoming an increasingly influential force in politics. This year’s banquet served as both a celebration of past achievements and a call to action as we look ahead to the upcoming presidential election and beyond.

“We’re so grateful for all the elected officials, candidates, and organizations who supported our banquet,” said IADO Board President Kevin Olickal. “Their dedication to our mission ensures that we maintain momentum and continue to make strides toward a more equitable and just political landscape.”

Keynote Speakers, Special Guests, and Honorees,The banquet opened with a networking reception at 5:30 PM, followed by remarks from IADO leadership and key elected officials. Special recognition was given to this year’s honorees:Honorary Membership Award: Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and Lifetime Achievement Award: Dr. Mridu Sekhar, a dedicated community leader.

Attendees also enjoyed remarks from prominent candidates and community leaders, who highlighted the importance of engaging South Asian Americans in the political process and advocating for policies that benefit immigrant and working-class families.
