News reports say she ran away because her father lost his job and she was afraid the family would be deported back to India.

On Feb. 11 and 12, the community held a vigil for the missing teen. According to a Yahoonews report, dozens of friends and family gathered for the prayer vigil. The vigil was held on Saturday as the family hoped the teen would return to take her ACT college entrance exam scheduled for the same day.

Meanwhile, large billboards are placed around the region displaying a photo of Tanvi and giving details about her in the effort to track her down.

She was last seen on Jan. 17, going past the school bus that she usually boards to go home.

According to news reports, Tanvi’s father Pavan Roy mentioned to her that he could lose his job as the tech company he works for was cutting employees.

According to Yahoonews, if Roy loses his job the family would have about 10 days to leave the country. Roy apparently told her not to panic.

“I said… let you and your mom first go back to India, let me figure out what and how the system works out, get a proper job, and then call you back. [She said] ‘What, go back to India? Why should I go back to India? I’ve been here.’,” the news report quotes the father saying.
