Indian Embassy celebrates the 7th International Day of Yoga

On Sunday June 20, 2021 the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C. held International Day of Yoga at India House, with the theme “Yoga for Wellness”.

Welcoming the participants, Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu stressed Yoga’s potential to provide both health and happiness by improving the physical and mental wellbeing of people, especially given the impact of the global pandemic.

Ambassador Sandhu also noted that India and the United States have stood shoulder to shoulder with each other in fighting the pandemic, a press release from the Indian Embassy said.

As part of the celebrations, a common Yoga protocol session was conducted. Ambassador and Embassy officials participated in the session in person, while a large number of people across U.S. joined virtually through Zoom and Embassy’s social media handles, a press release from the Indian Embassy said.

All the five Consulates of India in U.S. namely New York, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta and San Francisco, also held various programs to mark IDY 2021.

Apart from the celebrations in Times Square in New York and Liberty Park in New Jersey, the American Academy of Yoga and Meditation, with the support of the Consulate General of India in Atlanta, held International YogaCon USA 2021 with “unprecedented response” the Embassy said.

Indian Consulates also held events in Florida and Puerto Rico to mark the IDY2021.

The Consulate General of India, Houston held Yoga events at Buffalo Bayou Park, Houston and in at River Walk in partnership with the City of San Antonio.

In San Francisco, the Indian Consulate held Yoga Day celebrations at Palace of Fine arts. There were also Distinguished Speaker sessions by Vivekananda Yoga University held in Los Angeles and a Yoga quiz on FM radio.

In the run up to IDY 2021, several curtain raiser events in various formats were hosted by the Embassy and Consulates, while more events have been planned in coming days.

Across the United States, celebrations are being held with the active participation and support of American people, including community organizations and Yoga enthusiasts, the press release noted.
