Indian community of Niles Township celebrates 78th Independence Day of India at India Hub

Niles Township, IL, August 24, 2024 – The Indian Community of Niles Township (ICNT) celebrated the 78th Independence Day of India with vibrant music, inspiring speeches, and a profound sense of pride at India Hub on Saturday, August 24, 2024. As part of the “Coming Together in Niles Township” festival, this event highlighted the diverse ethnic communities that contribute to the richness of the township. The program began with the national anthems of the United States and India, symbolizing unity and mutual respect.

Master of Ceremonies, Usha Kamaria, a former President of ICNT, initiated the proceedings by inviting attendees to settle into their seats. She delivered a formal welcome, paying homage to the Bangladeshi Hindus, and led the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. Distinguished guests, including Hon. Somnath Ghosh, Consul General of India in Chicago, Pinakin Desai, Acharya Shri Rohit Joshi, Dr. Bharat Barai, Harish Kolsani, Bhailal Patel, Dr. Rashmi Patel, Virendra Patel, and Sohan Joshi, participated in this auspicious ceremony.

ICNT President Acharya Rohit Joshi introduced Consul General Ghosh, who was warmly welcomed with a flower bouquet as a token of appreciation. In his address, Ghosh highlighted the significant contributions of the Indian diaspora to India’s development and the strengthening of India-USA relations. He urged the community to continue serving as ambassadors for India and to raise awareness of the positive impact of their efforts on both personal and national levels.

The Independence Day celebration featured a series of cultural presentations, speeches, and honors. Distinguished guests, including Dr. Barai and Desai, were recognized with flower bouquets and shared their reflections on the importance of commemorating India’s independence and the global influence of the Indian diaspora.

A special recognition was bestowed upon Desai, Assistant Director of Maintenance and Operations for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. With over 25 years of experience in wastewater treatment, Desai has significantly contributed to energy management and plant operations both locally and internationally. In February 2024, he presented at the Water and Waste Management Conference at Changa University in India, where he shared his expertise on wastewater treatment and energy management.

The evening also featured a lively Jam Session, showcasing the artistic talents of the community, and concluded with a vote of thanks. Recognition was extended to Consul General Ghosh, Dr. Barai, Harish Kolasani, and Desai, along with other dignitaries including Bhailal Patel, Dr. Rashmi Patel, and Sohan Joshi. The event supporters, including India House and Mehta from Care for Soul, as well as Virendra Patel, President of USP, and the volunteers of USP, were also acknowledged.
