NEW YORK: An Indian American post doctoral research student at Stanford University and alum of IIT Kanpur, Sayak Banerjee, has seemingly vanished without a trace in California, for almost two weeks.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is now asking for the public’s help in finding a missing 33-year-old Banerjee.

Banerjee, who lives on the 1100 block of Laurel Street in San Carlos, was last seen by neighbors the week of April 16 and his wife last spoke with him by phone on April 20, according to the Sheriff’s Office, reported Mercury News.

According to Banerjee’s LinkedIn profile, he is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford, studying jet fuels and rocket fuels. Banerjee received his Ph.D. from Stanford in 2014.

On Monday, Banerjee’s wife reported him missing after he failed to arrive at Orlando International Airport, where he was supposed to meet her. Detective Sal Zuno said Banerjee was scheduled to fly out of San Francisco International Airport, but there is no evidence he boarded a flight.

Banerjee also works as a mechanical engineer in the Bay Area and regularly travels to Florida, where his wife lives and works, Zuno said.

Banerjee is believed to have driven away from his home in his black 2005 Hyundai Accent, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The license plate number of the car is 6VDS335.

The Sheriff’s Office characterized Banerjee’s disappearance as “abnormal,” but no evidence has surfaced to suggest foul play.

“Nothing has turned up so far that suggests there was a problem,” Zuno said, reported Mercury News.

Anyone with information about Banerjee’s whereabouts can contact Detective Dan Hoss at 650-363-4066 or dhoss@smcgov.org. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call 800-547-2700.
