Devinder Mahajan, professor in the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering and director of the Institute of Gas Innovation and Technology (I-GIT) at Stony Brook University, New York, has been named to the Class of 2024 SUNY Technology Accelerator Fund (TAF).

This award provides vital support to faculty inventors and scientists across the State University of New York, SUNY,  system, according to a January 9, 2025 press release from Stony Brook.

The award recognizes Mahajan’s “groundbreaking research” in developing a single system for storing and releasing blended hydrogen and methane under near-ambient temperature and pressure conditions.

“This innovative system addresses the significant challenges associated with efficiently storing and releasing hydrogen on demand, a critical step toward a sustainable energy future,” the University noted in the press release.

This year, SUNY invested $425,000 through TAF to fund seven promising projects with the potential to revolutionize healthcare, environmental protection, and New York’s high-tech electronics industry.

Administered by the SUNY Research Foundation, TAF aims to bridge the gap between research and the marketplace, and helps demonstrate the commercial viability of innovative technologies, possibly raising investor interest.

A graduate of Panjab University in Chemistry, Prof. Mahajan did his Masters and Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, Canada. Before joining Stony Brook in 2002, and becoming a tenured professor, Mahajan was a scientist at the Brookhaven National Lab since 1988. He also worked as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Akron, Ohio, and the City University of New York. He has received numerous honors and awards during his career.
