With thousands Fort Bend County residents in Texas are still without power following the devastating impact of Hurricane Beryl, Fort Bend County Judge KP George, an Indian American, has been leading relief efforts, working closely with county officials and agencies to coordinate resource gathering and community assistance.

In an exclusive interview with CW39 after the hurricane, he discussed Fort Bend’s ongoing recovery and restoration efforts.

“Obviously, with not having power, people cannot stay home,” said George as soaring temperatures and lack of power put residents in a tough situation. “So we have opened numerous shelters and also cooling centers in Fort Bend County. And currently we have two major shelters out in operational. Last night, we had 229 people where in those facilities. But during the day we have cooling centers.”

About restoring power, he said “Our Office of Emergency Management continues to operate at Level 2. And two days ago, I signed a disaster declaration along with the state,” adding Fort Bend County is a disaster declared county now working 24/7.

Responding to concerns from residents who reached out to him following an alert about a local drinking water facility, he noted “I just want people to know that there are no issues. But the warning went out because these facilities are on generators, they are running on generators.”
