Paper Flowers, a Hollywood film inspired by the true story of an Indian-American family with deep roots in Ahmedabad, moved audiences at a special screening at Connplex Theatre on Sindhu Bhavan Road recently. The love story is a deeply personal milestone for the film’s producer, Ahmedabad-native Asit Vyas.

Directed by Indian-American filmmaker Mahesh Pailoor, Paper Flowers tells the story of Shalin Shah, a courageous US Peace Corps Volunteer, and his high-school sweetheart. Their journey—anchored in love, resilience, and hope—captured global attention when Shalin’s viral article, “Thank You, Cancer,” was published by HuffPost in 2015.

A Homecoming with Heart

During a post-screening Q&A session, producer Asit Vyas, visibly moved, shared his reflections:

“Returning to Ahmedabad is deeply personal for me. This city shaped my earliest artistic dreams when I performed on stage here in 1983-84. To now bring Paper Flowers, a Hollywood film inspired by love and resilience, back to my roots feels like a full-circle moment. This film transcends boundaries, carrying a message of hope and humanity that belongs to everyone.”
