Government of India takes up matter of Indian student hospitalized after accident in US

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has taken up the matter of an Indian student Neelam Shinde, who met with an accident in the US and is hospitalized. The US side is looking into the formalities for early grant of visa for the family of the applicant, according to sources.

Earlier on Wednesday, February 26, NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule, noted on X, “Student Neelam Shinde has met with an accident in the USA and is hospitalized in a local hospital. Her father, Tanaji Shinde, from Satara, Maharashtra, India, urgently needs to visit his daughter due to a medical emergency. Tanaji Shinde has applied for an urgent visa to the USA and requires assistance. Requesting Hon. @DrSJaishankar Ji, @meaMADAD, and @IndianEmbassyUS to kindly look into the matter and help.”

According to multiple news reports, Neelam Shinde, 35, a post-graduate student in California, is in a coma following a hit-and-run accident that took place February 14.

According to a Zeenews report, Neelam Shinde is a Master of Science student at California State University. She was taken to the University of California Davis Medical Center where she is in a coma having suffered multiple severe injuries.

Zeenews also quoted from a letter issued by UC Davis Medical Center urging the patient’s blood relatives to help make medical decisions relating to the young woman who remains intubated.
