Experts, policymakers, social workers, leaders from 57 countries discuss global medical advances and challenges

The 12th mid-year conference of the Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (GAPIO.in) concluded successfully on the campus of the American University of Antigua College of Medicine (AUA) in Antigua and Barbuda on July 15-17, 2024.

It was organized in collaboration with American University of Antigua (AUA) – College of Medicine. The Lincoln American University, Georgetown, Guyana participated as the “Academic Partner.”

The conference focused on the theme: “Advantages and Challenges of Offshore Medical Education and Recent Advances and Challenges in Healthcare.”

The event brought together doctors from 57 countries, who participated both in-person and virtually. GAPIO called it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, with informative sessions led by renowned medical experts from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Antigua, other Caribbean Islands, and India.

The Chief Guest was the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda Sir Dr. Rodney Williams who inaugurated the conference. The Guest of Honor was High Commissioner of India to Antigua and Barbuda Dr. Amit Telang.

“Their involvement underscores the conference’s significance in fostering international collaboration and cooperation” within the medical community, GAPIO maintained in a press release.

Governor General Williams noted how the theme of the conference “resonates deeply with the transformative potential of global collaboration,” adding, “As we stand at the crossroads of opportunity and innovation, let us embrace the challenges and advantages of offshore medical education to improve healthcare delivery worldwide.” He envisioned a future where advanced medical knowledge and expertise transcend borders, ensuring a healthier tomorrow for all.”

Indian High Commissioner Dr. Telang noted that, “the exchange of knowledge and expertise in this forum highlights the significant progress and the hurdles we face in the healthcare sector,” adding “I am proud to see the valuable contributions that Indian-origin doctors are making to the medical field both in Antigua and globally.”

Dr. Nandakumar Jairam, president of GAPIO, said the conference highlighted recent advances in clinical sciences, showcasing cutting-edge research and breakthrough treatments that are shaping the future of medicine. “We shared knowledge, exchanged ideas, and inspired one another to push the boundaries of what is possible in healthcare,” he added.

He noted the importance of nurturing an entrepreneurial spirit among young medical doctors and students, areas the conference had highlighted, and which was part of GAPIO’s aim to empower the next generation of medical professionals.

Vice President of GAPIO and Chairman and Publisher of US-based Parikh Worldwide Media and ITV Gold Dr. Sudhir Parikh, expressed, his satisfaction with the successful conclusion of the conference. “It was a great GAPIO midyear conference. The conference was well organized and very resourceful. In addition, AUA’s hospitality was excellent and was very informative. Thanks to AUA’s leadership, especially the current president, Dr Peter Bell and Former President Neil Simon”

Dr. Abhijat Sheth, Joint Secretary of GAPIO and President, NBE, said, “This conference isn’t just about discussing the present; it was about nurturing the future. It was more than just an academic exchange; it’s a catalyst for collaboration and innovation,” that ultimately helps patients.

Discussions at the conference also highlighted the challenges of curriculum alignment, clinical training opportunities, and licensing requirements to further strengthen offshore medical education programs.

The event attracted not only physicians but also policymakers, social workers, and authorities from around the globe.

Among the major discussions during the conference were:

–Advantages and Challenges of Offshore Medical Education: Experts discussed the unique benefits and hurdles faced by medical institutions operating offshore, quality of training, and the diverse clinical experiences available to students in different geographical regions, and the impact that medical institutions, like AUA in the Caribbean are having on the current physician shortage.

–Recent Advances in Healthcare: Sessions on the latest developments in healthcare, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence (AI). Presentations and discussions highlighted how AI is transforming diagnostics, treatment planning, and patient care, along with the potential ethical and legal implications of these advancements.

–A notable session by Dr. Leslie Walwyn, Associate Dean of Global Health at AUA, focused on the impact of climate change on global health. Dr. Walwyn’s lecture provided a comprehensive overview of how environmental changes are affecting health outcomes worldwide and the necessary steps to mitigate these effects.1Interactive Panels and Discussions: The conference facilitated interactive panels and discussions that allowed participants to engage with experts on various topics, including the future of health delivery and the role of technology in medicine.

Other sessions were held on: Cracking FMGE and USMLE;  Growing Impact of Caribbean Medical Schools in the Region; and Hospital Running Lessons Inspired by the Life of Mahatma Gandhi by Dr. Anupam Sibal, President – GAPIO (2020-2022) and Group Medical Director, Apollo Hospitals Group, India.
