Gandhi Jayanti commemorated around India on 77th anniversary of Mahatma’s demise

Leaders from the Indian government and the opposition parties commemorated Gandhi Jayanti to remember India’s ‘Father of the Nation’ January 30, 2025.

Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar town of Gujarat, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known as Mahatma Gandhi, was a pioneer of non-violent resistance and played a key role in the Indian freedom struggle against British colonial rule.
On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse at Gandhi Smriti in Birla’s house, just months after India’s independence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar attended a prayer meeting at Gandhi Smriti in New Delhi and earlier on the same day, the PM tweeted on X, saying, “Tributes to Pujya Bapu on his Punya Tithi. His ideals motivate us to build a developed India. I also pay tributes to all those martyred for our nation and recall their service as well as sacrifices.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary. “On behalf of the grateful nation, I pay my tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, the leading figure of the Indian freedom movement, who popularised the Indian values of truth, non-violence and fight against injustice across the world,” Shah said, adding, “Mahatma Gandhi strengthened the freedom movement by binding the country in the thread of unity … His thoughts towards cleanliness, self-reliance and empowerment of rural India will continue to inspire the countrymen,” Shah posted on X.pposition leader Rahul Gandhi paying his tributes to Mahatma Gandhi described the departed leader as the “soul” of the nation.

Taking to X, Rahul Gandhi said, “Gandhiji is not just a person, he is the soul of India and is alive in every Indian even today. The power of truth, non-violence and fearlessness can shake the roots of even the biggest empire – the entire world takes inspiration from these ideals of his. Hundreds of salutations to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma, our Bapu on his Martyrdom Day.”

Chief Ministers and leaders of various states held special memorials to pay tribute nationwide.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, in his social media post on X, wrote, “Tribute to the great revolutionary and Father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi, on his death anniversary. Today, let us also honour our bravehearts who attained martyrdom in the line of duty, shielding the integrity of our motherland. Your supreme sacrifice shall remain etched in the collective memory of the nation forever.: supreme sacrifice shall remain etched in the collective memory of the nation forever.”

Congress Party President Mallikarjun Kharge said Gandhiji’s ideas of Satya, Ahimsa, Sarvodaya and Sarvadharma Sambhava “continue to light our path.”

Other state leaders who paid tribute included Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami; Himarchal Pradesh Congress leaders including Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania nd Pratibha Singh, Andhra Pradesh Governor Abdul Nazeer, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin, among others.

India observes Martyrs’ Day every year on January 30 to mark the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and to honor his contribution towards the freedom of the country.
