June, the month when monsoon arrives in South-Western and Western India, is when a shower of Hindi film celebrities were born. Here is a look at 12 illustrious names.

  1. R. Madhavan / June 1

Ranganathan (R.) Madhavan is an actor, filmmaker and writer across Hindi, Tamil and Telugu cinema. Best known for TV serials Banegi Apni Baat and Ghar Jamai and later for films like Alaipayuthey (Tamil), Rang De Basanti, 3 Idiots and the Tanu Weds Manu franchise, the actor has now directed and featured in his tour de force, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect.

Sonakshi Sinha / June 2

She did her family proud with her smash debut in Dabangg. After an assortment of films and roles, Sonakshi Sinha also made her web debut in Dahaad, winning solid encomiums for a magnificent turn as a low-caste, extremely dedicated cop.

Viju Shah / June 5

The ultimate master of rhythm and techno music in Hindi cinema, Viju Shah, son of the legendary composer Kalyanji (-Anandji), is a musician and keyboardist extraordinaire, who has made a name as a composer and a background music wizard. His songs like Tirchhi topiwale, Saat samandar, Tip tip barsa pani and Aankh maare are re-creation fodder to this day, and his scores like Tridev, Vishwatma, Mohra, Gupt, Tere Mere Sapne and more endure. What’s more, he has excelled in demanding background scores in films like Chaalbaaz and Andaz Apna Apna.

Ektaa R. Kapoor / June 7

The uncrowned Czarina of television soap production, Ektaa R. Kapoor, Jeetendra’s daughter, has made a name for films and web series as well. Beginning her work in her father’s garage on a table with a fan in the early 1990s, she incredibly soon presented him with a Mercedes!

Though her first success was the serial, Hum Paanch, she soon became known for her obsession with the letter ‘K’ and numerology with Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, which broke all records in Television Rating Points, and many more. A Padma Shri awardee, Ektaa is also famous for work as varied as The Dirty Picture, Kyaa Kool Hain Hum, Kathal and The Test Case. She was also listed as one of 50 ‘Asia’s Most Powerful Communicators’ by AsiaWeek magazine in 2001.

Dimple Kapadia / June 8

Dimple Kapadia was a sensation in 1973, first with her whirlwind marriage to superstar Rajesh Khanna and next with her debut film, in and as Bobby. She quit films, but after her failed marriage, despite motherhood, she was back in films and soon vindicated her terrific display of talent in her debut film with movies like Saagar, Aitbaar, Kaash, Insaaf, Rudaali and Being Cyrus among many others. Her recent turns include Pathaan and Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo, the Disney+Hotstar series.

Jayashree T. / June 12

Jayshree T. has acted in around 350 films and TV serials in multiple languages, beginning as early as in 1959 with Goonj Uthi Shehnai. This Maharashtrian actress has been a junior artiste, dancer, comedienne, supporting actress, vamp and heroine and shone in all shades.

Pritam / June 14

A part of the Jeet-Pritam music team, Pritam became a solo composer after Yash and Aditya Chopra signed him for Dhoom (2004), whose title-track’s English version by Thai singer, Tata Young, became a rage across the globe. A trained sound engineer, who began composing ad jingles and TV serial title-tracks, he rapidly graduated to become the No. 1 film composer in a few years and has remained so now for over a decade. Jab We Met, the Race franchise, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and other films loom tall in his oeuvre that blends the best of the retro and the new, and Indian classical and Western.

Mithun Chakraborty / June 16

Once actually a Naxalite, Mithun Chakraborty has indeed come a long way since, and is a three-time National award winner (Mrigayaa, Tahader Katha and Swami Vivekananda as supporting actor). His image as a disco ace remained intact for over a decade with films like Disco Dancer, Dance Dance and more, but he has shown an equal flair for comedy (Housefull 2), villainy (Jallad) and romance (Pyar Jhukta Nahin). Today, he is respected as a powerful artiste in character roles (The Tashkent Files, The Kashmir Files, Bestseller and the Bengali Ek Nadir Galpo: Tale of a River).

Raj Babbar / June 23

He first achieved fame in a negative lead (Insaf Ka Tarazu), and so, initially, Raj Babbar did quite a few such roles (Inteha, Aitbaar and others). But simultaneously, he was also a success in positive roles such as Hum Paanch, Nikaah and Aaj Ki Awaz. Raj Babbar shifted to character roles fairly early with films like Ghayal and Aankhen, and has now established himself as a dependable actor across genres in films, TV and on the web (Happy Family: Conditions Apply).

Karisma Kapoor  / June 25

The elder daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita, Karisma Kapoor was, simply, the topmost heroine among the multiple actress discoveries of the 1990s. At her peak (she has also starred recently in the web series, Mentalhood). Besides being known for multiple films with Govinda and also Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar, Karisma was a favorite with director David Dhawan and has excelled in films like Dil To Pagal Hai, Biwi No.1, Fiza and Zubeidaa.

Arjun Kapoor / June 26

Boney Kapoor’s son began well with Ishaqzaade, but has since failed to sustain the success quotient. 2 States (2014) remains his only big hit to date, though Arjun has proved his versatility by giving great accounts of himself in films as varied as Aurangzeb, Gunday, Finding Fanny and Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar.

Vishal Dadlani / June 28

The senior half of the popular Vishal-Shekhar duo, and a singer and lyricist on his own, Vishal has also been a crucial member of the rock band, Pentagram, in his time. As singer, he has excelled in songs like Balam pichkari¸ Swag se swagat, Desi girl, Sheila ki jawani and others. His foremost films as part of the Vishal-Shekhar composer duo include Om Shanti Om, Sultan, Befikre and the recent Pathaan.
