FIA-NYNJCT holds flag-hoisting for India’s Independence Day at Times Square

The Federation of Indian Associations -NYNJCT, held a flag hoisting ceremony at Times Square, attracting a large crowd of people at the ‘Crossroads of the World.’

Executives of the Federation of Indian Associations of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, held a flag hoisting ceremony on the occasion of India’s Independence Day at Times Square August 15, 2024.

Apart from the executive committee and members of FIA and the Indian community, the event had among special guests, India’s Consul General in New York Binaya Srikant Pradhan, as well as India’s Minister for State for External Affairs & Textiles Pabitra Margherita.

Minister Margherita posted a picture of the large crowd present to witness the flag hoisting, and spoke about rich contributions made by Indian-American community in cementing India-USA partnership. And he also posted on X, “Joined the hoisting of the Tiranga at the iconic Times Square on the joyous occasion of 78th Independence Day of India, in a ceremony organised by @FIANYNJCTNE . May the Indian Tricolour always fly high! Jai Hind!”

The event also included colorful dance performances.

Earlier the same day, the Indian Consulate in New York held the traditional flag hoisting where the President of India’s speech to the nation was read out, and cultural items were presented.

Later the same evening, the World Trade Center building was lit up in the colors of the Indian flag. “The Iconic World Trade Center building, tallest building in the United States of America in New York was lit up in tricolors in celebration of the 78th Independence Day of India,” the Indian Consulate posted on Facebook.

Numerous events were held around New York including Mayor Eric Adams headlining one. Philadelphia also had a celebration on August 15, honoring India’s independence.
