Federation of Indian Associations joins initiative to illuminate Empire State building for Diwali

New York, NY – 30 October 2024 – The leading Indian American community organization, Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) in partnership with Empire State Realty celebrated Diwali, the Festival of Lights, by illuminating the iconic Empire State Building.The spectacular display began October 30, the day before offical Diwali which fell this year on October 31.

Diwali, celebrated by millions around the world, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil noted FIA in a press release.

“For the Indian community in the U.S., this festival is not just a cultural celebration; it is a reaffirmation of heritage that fosters unity and community spirit. The opportunity to light up the Empire State Building during this auspicious time is a significant gesture that recognizes the contributions and importance of the Indian diaspora to the rich tapestry of American culture,” organizers said.

In the spirit of giving on Diwali, the FIA also implemented its annual Diwali Soup Kitchen drive,  serving more than 4,000 meals to those in need across various locations in New Jersey and extending its reach to communities in India, specifically in Ranchi and Ahmedabad.

On the occasion, President of FIA Dr. Avinash Gupta said, “Lighting up the Empire State Building is a momentous occasion for our community and a recognition of the cultural richness that the Indian diaspora brings to the United States.”

Chairman Ankur Vaidya said, “We are also proud to continue our tradition of service through the Diwali Soup Kitchen. It is our way of giving back and sharing the joy of this festival with those who may be facing difficulties.”

According to FIA, this celebration, “reflected on the core values of Diwali: togetherness, compassion, and the pursuit of a brighter future for all.”
