It is easy to see how Yoga has become a household word in the US when you have a USA Yoga Federation, which is at this very moment, involved in organizing the National Championships to be held a little more than a month after International Yoga Day June 21.

According to studies done by other leading yoga organizations in the US, like Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance, there are 36 million people who practice yoga in this country.

The USA Yoga Federation wants to add to these millions by carrying on traditions established in India with this ancient Hindu lifestyle and spiritual practice. It notes that Yoga Asana competitions originated in India hundreds of years ago and are still being conducted there as a means to inspire yoga practice.

The Federation encourages those within the fold of yoga, whether as a donor, athlete, coach, judge or sponsor, to contribute to the organization, saying “you inspire practitioners of all ages to improve their practice. Your gifts and membership brings newcomers to the practice of yoga and the sport of Yoga Asana.”

USA Yoga’s mission “is to promote the practice of yoga as a means to improve the physical health and mental well-being of people of all ages and fitness levels, and to advance yoga asana as a sport.”

It aims to promote the creation of educational and outreach programs, regional and national yoga championships, and scholarships to yogis.

“Your participation provides athletes the opportunity to demonstrate competitive excellence and to inspire others to participate and advance in their own practice,” says USA Yoga.
