Dr. Satheesh Kathula and team commit to taking AAPI to new heights

Dr. Satheesh Kathula of Dayton, Ohio, who has assumed charge as the president of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, AAPI, said he is honored to lead the largest ethnic physicians’ organization in the United States (aapiusa.org).

“With the cooperation and collaboration of an excellent team of dedicated, hardworking, and loyal officers and executive committee members who are with me, we will take AAPI to newer heights,” Dr. Kathula added.

A board-certified hematologist and oncologist from Dayton, Ohio, practicing Medicine for over two decades, Dr. Kathula, who was the President-Elect at AAPI faced no contest as he took over the leadership. He thanked all the AAPI members for participating in the voting process to elect “a new, diverse, balanced, and experienced team to lead AAPI.”

Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, who served as Vice President in the past year now automatically becomes the President-Elect of AAPI for the current year.

Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, the President-Elect in 2024-25 praised Dr. Kathula in a statement and vowed to take AAPI to greater heights.

“Since my membership to AAPI In 1997, I have been a dedicated foot soldier for the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin,” said Dr. Chakrabarty who is a Consultant Urologist, Poplar Bluff Urology, Past Chairman of Urologic Clinics of North Alabama P.C., and the Director of the Center for Continence and Female Pelvic Health.

Leaders of the team now in charge, thanked past leaders and members who had served AAPI well.

Dr. Kathula, who graduated from Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India in 1992 is a clinical professor of medicine at Wright State University-Boonshoft School of Medicine, Dayton, Ohio. A Hematologist and Oncologist in the Dayton community,  Dr. Kathula is a Diplomate of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine, and has authored several papers published in medical journals. He is in the process of writing a book, describing his journey as an immigrant physician.

While elaborating on his broader agenda as the 43rd President of AAPI, Dr. Kathula, said, “I will collaborate with legislative bodies and medical associations such as the AMA, ACP, and FSMB, in our efforts to amplify our impact.”

His vision for AAPI includes the following:

  • Promote AAPI’s mission of education, excellence in patient care, research, and professionalism.
  • Increase membership of AAPI and enhance membership benefits. Engage the younger generation more.
  • Collaborate with major physician organizations in the US.
  • Fast-tracking of Green Cards process for Physicians
  • Leverage the strength of 100,000 Indian American doctors through Legislative endeavors.

According to AAPI’s estimate, Indian American physicians serve 1 in every 7 patients in the US, and the more than 125,000 AAPI members care for millions of patients every day.

Several of them have risen to hold high profile jobs, including that of Surgeon General, shaping the policies, programs, and inventions that shape the landscape of healthcare in the US and around the world.
