IMDb (www.imdb.com), an authoritative source for information on movies, TV shows and celebrities, presented an IMDb “Breakout Star” STARmeter Award to Black Warrant star Zahan Kapoor. Zahan is the son of Kunal Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor’s son, and bears an amazing resemblance to his grandfather.

The award recognizes strong performers on the Popular Indian Celebrities list published on the IMDb app. The list charts the page views of more than 250 million monthly visitors to IMDb worldwide, and has proven to be a keenly accurate predictor of stars who are about to have a breakthrough career moment.

In an exclusive chat with IMDb, Zahan reflected on how theatre shaped his craft, a memorable lesson from Hansal Mehta on the sets of Faraaz, and the work ethic that runs in the Kapoor family.

When asked what he would have missed if he had not started his career in theater, Zahan said, “I would have missed out on so much. I think theater has taught me the respect of the craft and what it means to work together in tandem with a lot of people, so I am very happy. It is very foundational as a craft for an actor, so that is really nice.”

When asked about any incident from the sets of Faraaz that stayed with him, he revealed, “It was the first day that we were shooting, and I had my first scene with director Hansal Mehta-sir. We did the scene a couple of times, and then Hansal-sir said, ‘Moving on.’ I said, ‘Sir, we can do it again a little better.’”

He goes on, “The director said, ‘No, I got it.’ To that, I said, ‘No sir, we can do it better,’ and he said, ‘Why? You want to feel like you have worked hard?’ I said, ‘No, no.’ He asked me if I trusted him, and I said, ‘Yes sir, of course, I trust you.’ So Hansal-sir also taught me that you don’t need to overdo it just for the sake of it. Trust the director, give the take and move on.”

When asked about a quality or work-ethic common to all the Kapoors, he revealed, “Yeah, the work ethic is to be really dedicated, to really want to give it your best. I think that is really important. I remember Chintu uncle (Rishi Kapoor) would always say, ‘Don’t let success go to your head, and don’t let failure go to your heart.’ It’s like you have to be a student of cinema, a student of the business. You can learn from everyone, from every opportunity. That attitude is what defines all the working members of the family.”
