Deputy Secretary Richard Verma reaffirms commitment to support Ukraine, other countries on trip

Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard R. Verma is visiting multiple countries, Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, and Austria September 5-9, to emphasize US support for their economies and defense.

In Ukraine, Deputy Secretary Verma will reaffirm U.S. commitment to support Ukraine’s economic resilience recovery agenda and self-defense against Russia’s ongoing invasion.  Senior representatives from U.S. private sector companies are accompanying the Deputy Secretary in Ukraine, a press release from the State Department said.

In Poland, Verma plans to engage with Polish government officials and private sector leaders in support of Ukraine’s economic recovery.  He will also focus on advancing Washington’s strategic partnership and shared goals such as strengthening NATO’s eastern flank during his visit to Slovakia.

In Austria, he is scheduled to meet with representatives from fellow Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe participating States to discuss issues related to Ukraine’s recovery.  The Deputy Secretary will also meet with International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi to discuss the Agency’s activities in Ukraine.

Deputy Secretary Verma also visited Lithuania September 4-5 where he signed the Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human Rights, Democracy, and of the Rule of Law under the Council of Europe.

In a tweet on X, Verma said, “Honored to sign the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention on AI and Human Rights, Democracy, & the Rule of Law on behalf of (US). The Convention reflects our enduring commitment to ensuring that AI technologies support respect for human rights & democratic values.”
