NEW YORK
New York City Chief Service Officer Laura Rog today announced final efforts to recruit New Yorkers 18 and older to build careers in the public sector through full-time AmeriCorps opportunities at organizations and city agencies in the five boroughs. The campaign “Serve Your City, Shape Your Future” aims to inspire the city’s service-oriented individuals to give back to the city and invest in their personal and professional development through an AmeriCorps year of service.

“AmeriCorps members ‘Get Stuff Done’ for the greater good of our city, and we welcome their energy, talent, and spirit of service,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams. “This is the city of opportunity, and with this campaign we hope to reach communities across the city to ensure all AmeriCorps opportunities are available to all those who have a passion for service.”

“I first started my career in public service as an AmeriCorps member, an experience that gave me the real-world skills that brought what I had learned in college to life. Most importantly, my AmeriCorps year gave me the opportunity to direct my passion and energy into building lifelong skills that showed me how to make a real impact in my local community – serving in AmeriCorps fortified my commitment to public service and I am so proud to offer more than a hundred AmeriCorps opportunities for New Yorkers to shape their future and contribute to safer, livable communities in every borough,” said Chief Service Officer Laura Rog.

NYC Service’s AmeriCorps programs offer individuals practical professional experience in the public sector, 200+ hours of professional development and training, and more than $5,000 for past or future education costs. NYC Service is making final efforts to encourage eligible New Yorkers to apply to the programs ahead of the application deadline on June 30th, 2024. The programs are highly desired, with more than 2,000 individuals having already started applications and over 20% of positions filled as of early June.

The “Serve Your City, Shape Your Future” recruitment campaign incorporates digital advertising and local outreach events to reach interested New Yorkers and ensure they are aware of the opportunities to shape their future. Last year, 25% of AmeriCorps members who successfully completed an NYC Service AmeriCorps program were hired by their host site and 96% of AmeriCorps members saw their term of service as furthering their professional goals. Since 2009, NYC Service has offered AmeriCorps opportunities and has amassed an alumni network of more than 2,400 individuals who have successfully completed an NYC Service AmeriCorps program. A recent longitudinal study of former members found 80% agree their NYC Service experience helped them succeed in their long-term career plans.
