New York, NY – March 10, 2025: On the eve of International Women’s Day, the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) hosted a special screening of the acclaimed film Fashion, celebrating the resilience, ambition, and triumphs of women. The event took place on March 7, 2025, at Village East by Angelika, New York, and featured an engaging conversation with Padma Shri awardee and five-time National Award-winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar.

Presented by the Indo-American Arts Council (IAAC) in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in New York, the event provided a platform to discuss the portrayal of women in cinema and the broader challenges they face in society. Bhandarkar, known for his realistic and socially conscious storytelling, has directed critically acclaimed films such as Chandni Bar, Page 3, and Fashion, each shedding light on various facets of society.

Also in attendance was Deepanjana Klein, Director of Acquisitions and Development at Kiran Nader, who presented a special NYIFF award to Bhandarkar in recognition of his contributions to Indian cinema. Klein, a leading figure in the art world, previously served as the International Head of Contemporary Indian & Southeast Asian Art at Christie’s for over a decade.

The screening was a part of IAAC’s ongoing efforts to promote Indian arts and culture in the United States. This year holds particular significance as NYIFF celebrates its 25th anniversary, marking it as the longest-running and most prestigious Indian film festival in North America. The milestone festival, set to take place in June, will continue to highlight powerful stories and voices shaping Indian cinema.

With Fashion delving into themes of identity, ambition, and empowerment, the evening served as a meaningful tribute to the strength and perseverance of women worldwide.
