Annual Indo-American Fair Attracts Thousands to West Windsor, N.J.

The annual Indo-American Fair held Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, New Jersey, attracted thousands of visitors over the two days, according to organizers.

Presented by ZEE TV, a premiere South Asian TV Channel, and Radio Mirchi, this year the Indo American Fair featured Bollywood celebrity Bhagyashree who made a special appearance on Aug. 31 interacting with thousands of excited fans.

On Sept. 1, popular Bollywood pop singer who has won many awards, Shibani Kashyap, gave a live performance on stage to the delight of the crowds.

Other attractions on stage included more Bollywood and ethnic dances, songs by many local singers, and a special segment for kids’ performance on stage, in which many leading dance schools of New Jersey took part.

The popular dances performed were Odissi, Bharatnatayam, Kuchipudi and Kathak, as well as Karnatak music, all classical music items reflecting the heritage of India in New Jersey.

There was also an impromptu dance competition from the audience and many give-aways at the event.

The popular Indian clothing, the ‘kurti’ was the best-selling item, along with silk sarees, scarves, stoles, handicrafts of all kinds, as well as bags, jewelry, including diamonds and one-gram gold jewelry. Many insurance companies, and a variety of vendors from all over the United States participated in the Indo American Fair, organizers said in a press release.

Indian Cuisine – vegetarian and non-vegetarian- was also a major attraction at the Fair. A number of leading Indian restaurants were there to offer variety of foods to the people visiting the Fair.   There was special mango ‘lassi’ (a mixture of milk and mango) and other North and South Indian popular appetizers and dishes added to the attraction to the food court.

The Fair which has been celebrated for 16 years, aims at promoting understanding and appreciation of India’s rich culture, craft and culinary arts, showcased through local businesses and local talent.

Many elected officials visited the fair and appreciated the celebration of diversity. All of them applauded the work of leading organizers Arun and Rajesh Anand.

The fair was a public event and open to all, and attended by many non-Indians. The Fair has become an institution in New Jersey, and organizers were honored by the New Jersey State Senate and the General Assembly for promoting love, harmony and diversity in the State.
