Eisenhower Park, October 13, 2024 — In a remarkable display of unity and community support, the American Punjabi Society (APS), in partnership with the APS Women’s Council and Blood Cancer Specialists, hosted a 5K Cancer Awareness Walk at Eisenhower Park. Over 300 participants gathered to promote cancer awareness, prevention, and fitness.

The event was spearheaded by key figures in cancer care, including Gurmohan Syali, Chief Medical Officer of Blood Cancer Specialists, and doctors Tarun Wasil and Jagmohan Kalra. Their leadership emphasized the critical role of community involvement in cancer prevention and treatment.

Attendees, ranging from families to healthcare professionals, enjoyed a day filled with activities. Raffles, arts and crafts, health consultations, and a hot breakfast provided by local businesses made the event both engaging and educational. Vendors and volunteers from various health sectors also contributed by raising awareness about organ donation, physical therapy, and blood donation, essential aspects of cancer care.

The involvement of prominent community leaders such as APS President Gary Sikka and Executive Vice President Mohinder S. Taneja, as well as the APS Women’s Council, ensured the event’s success. The council, led by Chair Navneet Sondhi, played a pivotal role in coordinating the day’s activities.

The event kicked off with a Pledge of Allegiance led by young volunteers, symbolizing the importance of the next generation’s involvement in cancer awareness. The Nassau County Police were present to provide security, ensuring a safe environment for all.

This 5K walk was more than just a fitness event—it was a heartfelt expression of hope, collaboration, and dedication to the fight against cancer, underscoring the power of community initiatives in promoting health and well-being.
