Indian Student Shot Dead in Chicago During Robbery Attempt, Consulate Demands Justice

CHICAGO, IL – A tragic incident unfolded on November 29, 2024, when 22-year-old Indian student Nukarapu Sai Teja from Telangana was fatally shot outside a store in Chicago. The shooting, which occurred around 6:00 p.m. local time, is believed to have stemmed from what was initially reported as an attempted robbery.

According to the victim’s uncle, Talluri Srujan, two armed suspects entered the store where Sai Teja was present and demanded money. Despite complying with their demands and handing over the cash, Teja was shot shortly after stepping outside the store. The assailants fled the scene, and authorities are actively investigating the case.

Teja, who had moved to the U.S. just months earlier on June 15, had come to Chicago to pursue an MBA at Concordia University. Prior to his move, he had completed his BBA in Hyderabad. To support himself during his studies, Teja also worked part-time at a local petrol pump. At the time of the shooting, reports indicate that he was helping a friend at the store.

The Consulate General of India in Chicago expressed profound sorrow over the murder, offering condolences to the family and calling for swift justice. In a statement on social media, the consulate assured the victim’s family that they would extend all possible assistance in these trying times. “We stand with the grieving family and demand swift action against the perpetrators,” the consulate’s statement read.

Indian officials and members of the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) have mobilized efforts to support Teja’s family in this difficult period. Leaders from Telangana also joined in expressing their condolences and seeking justice for the young student.

The tragic event has not only left Teja’s family in mourning but has also raised concerns about safety for international students in the U.S. As investigations continue, authorities and community leaders are calling for increased vigilance and swift action to ensure such incidents do not occur again.
