Former Foreign Secretary of India Vinay Mohan Kwatra appointed Ambassador to US

India’s Ministry of External announced on July 19, 2024, that Vinay Mohan Kwatra has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the United States. “He is expected to take up the assignment shortly,” says the brief message from MEA on its website.

Kwatra succeeds Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu who ended his tenure earlier this year. Kwatra retired as Foreign Secretary the week before the announcement about his Ambassadorship to the US was announced.

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, in a July 14 tweet on X, said, “Thank outgoing Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra for his dedication and many contributions in the field of foreign policy and national security. Particularly in the last decade,he has helped strategize and execute so many of our key policies. Wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Ambassador Kwatra most recently served as the 34th Foreign Secretary of India from May 2022 to July 14, 2024. He has previously served as Ambassador to France and Nepal. He also served in the Prime Minister’s Office as Joint Secretary and was in the US as Minister of Commerce at the Indian Embassy. He was on the America’s Desk at the MEA dealing with Canada and US affairs.

He has a bachelors degree in Animal Husbandry from G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology and a masters degree in science. He speaks Hindi, English and French.
