Indian Americans in Long Island, NY, celebrate India’s T20 World Cup victory

A group of Indian Americans got together on Saturday, June 29, 2024, afternoon to show their support and joy on India’s cricket team winning the T20 World Cup Cricket match played in Barbados to become the champions.

A car rally was organized in Hicksville in Long Island, New York, initiated by cricket enthusiasts in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, which houses a significant number of people of Indian origin.

The rally started from the India Association of Long Island (IALI) Center in Hicksville. Many cars participated in this rally, a press release from film maker Mukesh Modi, one of the organizers, said. Modi, along with Nitin Khurana, Kishore Malik, Indu Jaiswal, Shashi Goyal, Tony Kejriwal, Beena Sabapathy, Prafulba Vaghela, Neeru Bhambri and Surin Manaktala, were instrumental in getting people together for the event.

Each car was adorned with Indian flags, and the line of cars started from Patel Brothers, passing Maharaja and Apna Bazar and finally came back to IALI Center. The participants cheered and shouted slogans like “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram”.

Within one hour of India’s victory in Barbados, the community activists were able to put the car rally together, a sign of the enthusiasm over the game. Modi congratulated the team and captain Rohit Sharma as well as the ICCI Board as well as India as a whole upon the victory.

Rajesh Kumar of Bengali Sweets distributed hot Jalebis to all the participants.
