Bangladeshi Immigrant Day & Trade Fair to be celebrated September 22 & 23 in New York City

Bangladeshi Trade Fair 2023, jointly organized by Muktdhara New York organization, US-Bangladesh Business Links and the Greater New York Chamber of commerce, will be held at the Hilton Midtown Hotel in New York September 22 & 23. The Fair will also be supported by the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI).

The New York State Assembly, in a proclamation, has recognized September 25 as the Bangladesh Immigrant Day in New York since 2016 to commemorate it as the first day in 1974 when the United Nations General Assembly was addressed in Bengali language.

According to the proclamation, the year 2023 celebrates over five decades of a successful partnership between Bangladesh and the U.S. The proclamation states that ‘New York City is home to the largest and the most vibrant Bangladeshi community in America”.

Founder of Muktdhara New York, Biswajit Saha, told News India Times that the organizers would welcome support and involvement of the entire South Asian community in this tradefair. “We are looking forward to support from businesses and community from Bangladesh, and also from India, Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and the remaining sub-continent.” “Cooperation and support for trade and progress is very important for all of us,” he said.

The Bangladesh Trade Fair and Immigrant Day celebrations began in 2016, according to Saha. His own organization, Muktadhara, formed in 1991, has been working in the community for the past 32 years, promoting culture through special events and bookfairs and bringing people and businesses together, getting support from the government agencies for the community and businesses.

According to Saha, the tradefair is designed to bring Bangladeshi trade and culture home to the U.S.. “It aims to facilitate USA-Bangladesh bilateral trade by bringing noted trade delegates from the USA and Bangladesh along with business conglomerates and investors,” he said.

Describing the trade fair, Saha said stalls of Bangladeshi products would feature prominently. “But, more importantly, there will be a seminar on the export of Bangladeshi Various businesses will participate in the fair under this year’s theme ‘Exploring opportunities towards Smart Economy’. These include businesses from the banking and financial services, capital market, readymade garments, textiles, medical & pharmaceuticals, agro & agro processed food & beverage, IT & IT-enabled services, leather & leather goods, handloom and handicrafts, jute & jute diversity products, real estate and tourism, and more.

The event’s goal is to promote Bangladeshi products and services,  facilitate strategic business tie-ups, encourage bilateral trade between Bangladesh and the U.S., and create awareness about Bangladesh’s  business opportunities.

Last year, more than 30 prominent business organizations from Bangladesh took part in the fair. It also attracted a lot of renowned economists and business leaders from Bangladesh and the USA.

As a major step in the direction of future Bangladesh and USA economic and commercial cooperation, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the FBCCI and the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce, recognizing the immense possibilities.

More than 250,000 Bangladeshi-origin people live in New York City, in Jackson Heights, Elmhurst and Woodside areas of the borough of Queens. There are a variety of grocery and clothing stores and restaurants. The NYS proclamation has called it the ideal place to visit if you want to learn and experience Bangladeshi-American culture. One of the streets in Jackson Heights was recently co-named ‘Bangladesh Street’ to recognize the community and its contributions to NYC life.
