More honors for pioneer cardiologist Dr. Navin Nanda

Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Navin C. Nanda, continues to receive more honors for his pioneering work in the field of echocardiography, a subspecialty of cardiology.

A recent one is from the Bangladesh Cardiac Society as the “Father of Modern Echocardiography and a legend who has contributed enormously to the development of Echocardiography in Bangladesh, more than any other outside physician.”

Another is the Dr. Navin Nanda Echocardiographic and Vascular Training Academy named after him in the Philippines.

Dr. Nanda is recognized by many prestigious institutions around the world for his pioneering work and innovations in echocardiography and cardiology over the past 5 decades.

The impact and outcome include – very  early and accurate detection of different types of heart diseases  in not only  adults but also children, newborns and fetuses using a small, inexpensive, and highly portable device, which can be used in remote areas.  This has resulted in timely treatment of many heart diseases with resulting  reduction in suffering and death in the population worldwide but specially in countries like India.

Dr. Nanda has authored/coauthored more than 1,000 publications including 530 original peer reviewed pioneering papers, 17 textbooks and many videotexts and CDs dealing with this subject.

He was also one of the four original incorporators of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) decades ago; was honored by AAPI in 1995 with the  Most Distinguished Service Award, and by the Cardiological Society of India, Indian College of Cardiology, and the Indian Academy of Echocardiography as the “Father of Echocardiography”.

The Cardiological Society of India instituted the annual “Dr. Navin Nanda Young Investigator Award” in 2005. Earlier in 2002, The Association of Physicians of India honored him with a Special Millennium Award “for contributing in a major way to the growth and development of medicine particularly cardiology in India. No other outside physician has done so much for India in recent times.”

He received the first Millennium Lifetime Achievement Award of the Indian College of Cardiology for pioneering contributions in 2003, and the Government of India bestowed the Life Time Achievement Award in 2002, as well as “Icon of the Century in Cardiology and Echocardiography in the World.”
