Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Illinois, “strongly” endorsed by Daily Herald

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Illinois, who is running for re-election for a fourth term, was endorsed June 7, 2022, by The Daily Herald’s editorial board, for the June 28 Democratic Party primary.

The Daily Herald is considered suburban Chicago’s largest daily newspaper.

Krishnamoorthi has already received numerous endorsements from other news outlets, major labor unions, environmental organizations etc., including Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Sierra Club, President Barack Obama, Rep. Tammy Duckworth, and more than 20 other members of Congress, including U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Jan Schakowsky. In total, Krishnamoorthi’s campaign is supported by more than 100 local and national leaders and organizations, his election website says. The list also includes several Indian-Americans as well as the Indo-American Democratic Organization (IADO), among the oldest Indian-American political action committees.

“In his three terms in Congress, U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi of Schaumburg has quickly established himself as one of the most prominent Democrats on Capitol Hill, a legislator who can lead on tough issues while still working collaboratively across the aisle,” The Daily Herald said in a statement.

“He’s an accessible, hardworking left-of-center politician who has earned a positive ranking in the Bipartisan Index calculated by the nonprofit Lugar Center and the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University,” noted the editorial board of the leading paper which went on to list the Indian-American Congressman’s achievements and initiatives on Capitol Hill.

“At a time of growing partisan and extremist rancor in the House, Krishnamoorthi has found ways to work effectively with colleagues of both parties to address the dangers of vaping, build workforces and address stock trading by members of Congress. He’s helped protect the nation from COVID-19 and advance technical education,” the paper said.

“He is an able and likable problem solver who gets things done — someone with the experience to understand how to work effectively when his party controls the House and when it does not. Why would Democrats in Illinois’ 8th Congressional District want to lose those skills?” the editorial board questioned.

They concluded, “We have endorsed Krishnamoorthi in previous elections and we have been happy with his performance. We strongly endorse him in the June 28 Democratic primary.”

Krishnamoorthi came to Capitol Hill Jan. 3, 2017, and has been re-elected since then. This term ends Jan. 3, 2023.

In this primary, he is being challenged by Junaid Ahmed, who on his campaign website says he used to support Krishnamoorthi and accuses him of allegedly taking money from individuals associated with special interests in India.

Five Republicans are running in the June 28 GOP primaries, as is an Independent candidate Mohammed Faheem, according to Ballotpedia.
