New York Indian Consulate commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s 73rd death anniversary

The Consulate General of India, New York in collaboration with various organizations observed the 73^rd Punyatithi of Mahatma Gandhi on Saturday, January 30^th 2021, at the Consulate and in  online events.

Consulate General of India and Gandhian Society USA hosted a prayer meeting and paid homage to the Father of the Nation on Jan. 30 morning at the Consulate premises.

Following social distance protocol, limited guests were invited to the Consulate. A number of people joined online.

Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite Bhajans (hymns) were sung on the occasion.

Eric Adams (Brooklyn Borough President), Ela Gandhi (Granddaughter of Gandhiji), Upendra Chivukula (Commissioner NJ Board of Public Utilities), Arun Gandhi (Grandson of Mahatma Gandhi), and other dignitaries remembered the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.

Consul General Randhir Jaiswal in his remarks, noted that a number of leaders around the world including in the United States, were inspired by Gandhiji’s message of peace and non-violence.

He specifically highlighted how Martin Luther King Jr followed the path of non-violence preached by Mahatma Gandhi and the impact both leaders had on John Lewis, late member of Congress and civil rights leader who died recently.

The second event was held the same day from 03:00 –04:00 pm in collaboration with Shanti Fund.

Representatives of different faiths held an inter-faith prayer meeting to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. They sang devotional songs, hymns and faith prayers to celebrate the Mahatma’s belief in universal brotherhood and harmony.

Council of Heritage and Arts of India, Inc. (CHAI)organized an event to observe Gandhiji’s Punyatithi. The event was conducted virtually. Consul General Jaiswal was the Chief Guest.

He spoke about the ever-increasing relevance and increasing importance of Gandhiji’s message in the contemporary world.
