New Jersey political activist seeks party endorsement for State Assembly run

President of National Organization for Women of New Jersey Anjali Mehrotra is seeking the Democratic nomination for NJ State Assembly from Legislative District 21.

Anjali Mehrotra of Mountainside, New Jersey, a long time Democratic political activist, announced on Jan. 25 that she is seeking the Democratic nomination for New Jersey State Assembly from Legislative District 21.

If she wins the primary election, which is to be held on June 8, 2021, she will become a candidate for the state assembly.

A strong candidate, Mehrotra has been the president of the National Organization for Women of New Jersey (NOW) and Municipal Chair of the Mountainside Democratic Committee.

Born and raised in India, Mehrotra moved to New Jersey to attend college at Stevens Institute of Technology where she studied Bachelors in Engineering and Master in Science, both in the Computer Science field, according to her bio.

She later obtained a certificate in digital design from Parsons School of Design, N.Y., to start her career as a freelance designer.

According to her bio, Mehrotra has been involved in Democratic politics through her work on campaigns. In 2016, she volunteered for the Clinton campaign in New Jersey during the primary, and worked in Pennsylvania for the General.

She joined Lacey Rzeszowski’s campaign for Assembly in Legislative District 21 and Linda Weber’s for Congress in Congressional District 7, in 2017. .

In 2020, Mehrotra joined the national communications team of Asians for Biden, helping turnout a key demographic which voted in historic numbers in swing states, the bio says.

In 2018, she also ran for Mountainside Borough Council but did not win.

Mehrotra has been serving as President of NOW-NJ since Jan. 2019. As cofounder of NJ’s first coalition focused on menstrual equity, she is working on a bill to provide free menstrual products in all public schools.

Mehrotra has lived in Legislative District 21 since 1995. Her twin daughters attended public schools in Mountainside and Berkeley Heights. Mehrotra also served as president of the Governor Livingston High School Parent Teacher Organization.
